Happy September! Got your pumpkin spice latte? Great! Now let’s talk Christmas…
Last November during NaNoWriMo I wrote a book for a big publisher-slash-maker of Christmas movies on a channel that shall remain nameless but that I know you all watch during the holidays. SNOWED IN turned out to be a cute, sweet, Christmas romance that takes place in New York City and New Jersey. It was inspired by my friend’s daughter, a wonderful young lady named Emma, who suggested I write a book about “a theater nerd named Andrew, pale, with blondish hair and green eyes.” For my heroine, I stole Emma’s first name and another friend’s last name, and Emma Ballard was born.
Here’s a cover I made up, along with the blurb:
Emma Ballard, a retired supermodel, has been the acting CEO and face of her family’s clothing business for the past five years, living the busy corporate life in New York City. She meets the Jersey branch IT supervisor, theater-nerd Andrew Mooney, when she gets stuck in a snowstorm after an office function.
Getting to know widower Andrew, his grumpy vet father, and his adorable six-year-old twin girls opens Emma’s heart to the possibility of having love and family in her life. Andrew’s opinion of Emma, the “corporate viper CEO” gossiped about at the water cooler, quickly changes as he discovers Emma’s wit, intelligence, and giving heart.
Although neither Emma nor Andrew are quite ready for a relationship and canoodling is against company policy, the holiday spirit of Manhattan is magical and contagious. As fate and Mother Nature would have it, Emma and Andrew keep finding themselves snowed in together, as they face their pasts and fall in love.
Surely, a model-turned-CEO may be a bit far-fetched, but no more so than a secret princess from a fictional land, or some of the other Christmas movies I’ve watched. Sadly, said publisher-slash-maker of Christmas movies on a channel that shall remain nameless but that I know you all watch during the holidays gave SNOWED IN a big old rejection. Sigh.
I thought about self-publishing the story or submitting it to other publishers, but then I had a better idea.
Starting this week, I’m going to post two chapters of SNOWED IN every week, here on WOAW! I thought I’d also share “author notes” in a separate, short post after each chapter to discuss what I was thinking and going for in the particular chapter, if anyone is interested. Maybe something like that could help writers and give readers insight into the makings of a romance.
Why post an entire book on the blog? Well, posting SNOWED IN here saves me the costs of self-publishing, but also allows me to share the story. I’m hoping you’ll stick with this sweet holiday romance through the fall and it will lead you right to the holidays. NOTE: EVEN MY RELATIVES CAN READ THIS ONE! No cursing, chaste kissing on snowy rooftops only. And to the people who’ve read my other books, I think it’s still a decent read even without that stuff!
In exchange for my posting the chapters, you’ll have to overlook my comma issues and any errors from not having SNOWED IN formally edited. Think of it as an Advance Reader Copy. I’ll also set up a page so that I can put the entire document together, both here on WOAW and on my Author Website, so that readers can catch up if they start late without having to navigate my posts. Once the story is out there in full, I’ll create .mobi and ePub documents for your eReaders.
SNOWED IN is a full-length novel, again, SWEET so no cursing and no S-E-X, with 29 chapters and an epilogue. As per the guidelines of the publisher-slash-maker of Christmas movies on a channel that shall remain nameless but that I know you all watch during the holidays, it’s written in third person, alternating point of views. If I start posting two chapters per week, that should bring us right up to mid-December for the epilogue. Maybe SNOWED IN can keep you entertained while you drink your PSLs, and eventually get you into the Christmas spirit!
I’m thrilled to be sharing with you and hope that you’ll come along for Emma and Andrew’s story! Of course, I’ll continue posting regular WOAW stuff too, in between.
Have a good night!
